But some states are better than others when it comes to offering the ideal remote work environment, according to a new WalletHub report that identified the best and worst states for working from home. To create this list, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across two main dimensions, work environment and living environment. New Jersey was named the best state for working from home thanks to its cheap internet costs and high access to broadband internet. Utah ranked second in part because it has the largest homes in the country, preventing remote workers from feeling confined. Here are the 10 best states for working from home, according to WalletHub:

But a lot of women haven't been able to take advantage of this remote work perk. Remote work has helped women's progress toward equal pay, but it's had a mixed impact on women's career advancement. On the one hand, remote work has allowed more women to stay in the workforce when they otherwise might forced out due to childcare demands. Executives at the online furniture retailer Wayfair told its staff in January that remote workers were likelier to be hit in its latest round of job cuts. Today, remote work has declined from its levels of the pandemic but is still – depending on how broadly one measures it – three to four times as prevalent as it was in 2019. CEOs are letting up on the battle to get employees to return to the office full-time, five days a week, according to a CEO survey from The Conference Board. Just 4% of US CEOs and 4% of CEOs worldwide say they will prioritize bringing workers back to the office full time, the survey found. Toward the latter half of 2023, major companies announced they were getting stricter on office work — but notably didn’t announce a full return. An EY US survey of C-suite corporate leaders found that full-time remote work plummeted from 34% in 2022 to just 1% in 2023. The study also noted that hybrid work is “firmly established.”CEOs will have to approach hybrid work at an industry-by-industry level, Scott said.

Another recent survey by consulting firm Mercer found that employers expect to promote just under 10% of their employees this year. Expect, too, to see a wider variety of employers offer more financial wellness benefits in 2024. “After three years of turmoil it finally looks like [work from home] has stabilized and 2024 will look a lot like 2023. Employees who can work a hybrid schedule are generally working from home roughly 30% of the week (or about 1.5 days), Bloom noted. For example, someone with a busy work schedule may opt to take them via text or chat on their phone on a Sunday morning, he said.

Now, though, a massive new study published in the journal Nature has shed new light on the effect of remote work on innovation. Even though remote work is a relatively new development in corporate settings, scientists and inventors have been collaborating over long distances for decades. On remote teams, by contrast, the more established collaborators tended to come up with the original idea on their own. And just because remote collaboration didn't work for innovation in the past doesn't necessarily mean it won't work in the future. But the study's findings — given the remarkable sweep of the data it examined — do suggest some guidance for companies in the age of remote work.

But the booming South Korean office market may bolster arguments that it is better for employees to head back to the office — at least for those watching the US's struggling commercial-real-estate sector. The increase in competition for office space has led to a roughly 15% rise in rental prices over the last year, Bloomberg reported. KEF found that now, fewer than 60% of big companies allow their employees to work remotely. Of the 40% of companies KEF surveyed that still allow remote work, almost two-thirds of those companies said they only allow it selectively. There has been a general shortage of office space since 2021 due to government restrictions on redevelopment and the pandemic's disruption of construction.

But the White House initiative will make more than $35 billion available from existing federal programs in the form of grants and low-interest loans to encourage developers to convert offices into residential. Office vacancies stand at a 30-year high of 18.2%, according to research by CBRE. Having employers examine social media wasn't a winning idea for most people. Only about four in 10 workers were comfortable with letting employers mine social media posts — signed or anonymous — for insights. That could come from sites like Glassdoor or apps like Blind or even social media posts that don't identify individuals. Not surprisingly, younger workers were somewhat more comfortable than their older colleagues with companies monitoring social media posts. Among Gen Z and millennial workers, 45% were OK with employers reviewing non-anonymous social media posts.
